Appointment scheduling is now available 

AARP Tax-Aide is a free service offered in conjunction with the IRS. Tax-Aide volunteers are trained to help you prepare and e-file your 2023 federal and NC state income tax returns, including a variety of common forms and schedules. We can also prepare and file returns for 2022 and 2021.

The AARP Tax-Aide site at the Elon University College of Law serves all persons, regardless of age or income. However, there are some types of returns we cannot prepare (these are listed below).


How our site will operate in 2024

When you make your appointment, you can choose whether to use our Drop-Off or In-Person option.

You must bring all of the following items to your appointment:

Photo ID for taxpayer (and spouse, if married filing jointly) – valid driver's license, military ID, passport, etc.

Social Security cards for all persons on the tax return – taxpayer, spouse, and anyone claimed as a dependent

Voided check or other bank account information, if you wish a refund to be direct-deposited

Your 2022 federal and state tax returns

Tax forms for all sources of income, including: W2 forms from employers; 1099 forms for other income – interest or dividends, Social Security, retirement or pension accounts, non-employee income, unemployment benefits, cancellation of consumer credit card debt, etc.

Tax forms for expenses such as child care, higher education, health insurance purchased on the ACA Marketplace, retirement contributions, Health Savings Accounts, etc.

If you are self-employed or are a gig worker, a summary of all income and expenses related to your self-employment

If you think you might be eligible to itemize deductions, a summary of your deductible expenses (this is not common)

If you have any of these situations, we cannot prepare your tax return:

Self-employment (Schedule C), if any of the following apply:

Capital gains and losses (Schedule D) without proper documentation

Income from rental property (Schedule E), or if you rent your personal residence for 15 days or more (includes income from AirB&B, VRBO, etc.)

Farm income or expenses (Schedule F)

Cancellation of debt for a consumer loan or business credit card

You have a Schedule K-1 that shows depreciation or other complicated entries

You are employed as a minister

You are active duty military

You have income from pursuing a hobby

You bought, sold, or traded in cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, etc.) or other digital assets (like NFTs)

An appointment is required. Appointments are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning February 1 through April 11, 2024.
